Cetaceans Home Page |
Cetaceans Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are fascinating to many people. It may be because of their size or because of their activities that can seem so playful or because of the attention that has been focused on human threats to these animals. The whales, dolphins, and porpoises are in an order known as cetaceans. These creatures of the sea are mammals just like humans. They breath air. They are warmblooded. They bear live young called calves which are nursed by their mothers. Here are currently seven species of cetaceans in U.S. waters that are protected under the Endangered Species Act. They are the blue whale, the bowhead whale, the fin whale, the
humpback whale, the northern right whale, the sei whale and the sperm whale. All seven species are listed as endangered. These whales became endangered because they were hunted so heavily that the populations were severely reduced. During the 19th century, whales were hunted primarily for oil and baleen. Before the advent of electricity, many American homes were lighted with whale oil. As recently as twenty years ago, products from whales were used for everything from machine oil to women's cosmetics. Because of the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972, it became illegal to import products containing materials from whales. Two species of whales may show the opposite extremes of what may happen in the future. Both the gray whale off of our west coast and the right whale off of our east coast were hunted to the verge of extinction. The gray whale may be the symbol of hope. The population has now recovered and has been removed from the list of endangered species. On the other hand, the right whale opulation, despite being protected from hunting for over fifty years, numbers less than 400 animals. Even in the best of circumstances, it may take a hundred years for the right whale population to recover. Humans still present a problem for the slow moving right whale, as one of the major causes of death for this species is collisions with ships. |

Sea Turtles |
Sea turtles are graceful saltwater reptiles, well adapted to life in their marine world. With streamlined bodies and flipper-like limbs, they are able to swim long distances in a relatively short time. When they are active, sea turtles must swim to the ocean surface to breathe every few minutes. When they are resting, they can remain underwater for as long as 2 hours without breathing. Although sea turtles live most of their lives in the ocean, adult females must return to land in order to lay their eggs. Scientists believe that nesting female turtles return to the same beach on which they were born. Often sea turtles must travel long distances from their feeding gro6unds to their nesting beaches. Just how sea turtles find their nesting beaches is unknown. All six species of sea turtles in the U.S. are protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 . These are the green, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, leatherback, loggerhead and olive ridley sea turtles. The hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, and leatherback sea turtles are listed as endangered under the ESA. The loggerhead, green and olive ridley sea turtles are listed as threatened, except for breeding populations of green sea turtles in Florida and on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and breeding populations of olive ridley sea turtles on the Pacific coast of Mexico, which are listed as endangered. Because sea turtles nest on land, jurisdiction over them is shared between NMFS and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. |

The Aquatic Realm |
Attention! Due to lack of time on my part from school, work, and other projects, I no longer have time to constantly update the Aquatic Realm, or its sections. Because of this, I am placing the entire Aquatic Realm (except the AFM Index) in a "hibernation" mode. This basically means you probably won't see any updates or improvements for a while (till possibly May of 1998). This doesn't apply to the Aquarium Fish Magazine Index, as I still plan on keeping that up to date. You will notice that throughout each section all submission forms have been removed. This move is being implemented so I don't have to shut the Aquatic Realm down permantly. Thank you for your understanding, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at scubajl@umd.umich.edu. |
